Big job sites make applying quick: one click, your saved profile, done. That speed is useful, but where you apply can change what happens next.
What happens when you apply
Most tech companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) such as Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workday. Recruiters review candidates inside that system.
- On the careers page, your application goes straight into the ATS, in the same format as everyone else’s, with every question the team asked.
- Through a job site’s own apply button, your application may be sent across as a profile, a PDF or an email, depending on how the employer set it up. Some teams handle these the same way; others review them later or less carefully.
You can’t see how a given company handles it, so applying directly is the safer default for roles you care about.
Other reasons to go direct
- The listing is current. Careers pages show jobs while they’re open. Copies elsewhere can linger after the role is filled.
- You see the full posting, including team details, pay range and application questions that aggregators sometimes cut.
- You can answer the custom questions. “Why this company?” and portfolio links help a recruiter, and they’re often skipped in one-click flows.
How to find the careers page
- Search the company name plus “careers” or “jobs”.
- Look for addresses such as
boards.greenhouse.io/…,jobs.lever.co/…,jobs.ashbyhq.com/…or….myworkdayjobs.com. These are the employer’s own ATS. - Find the same job title. If it’s not there, the role may be closed.
When the quick button is fine
For a long list of similar roles, one-click apply can be a reasonable way to cast a wide net. Save your effort for the roles you’d really want, and apply to those directly.
How Jobly fits in
Almost every job in Jobly comes straight from an employer’s own ATS or careers site, and its Apply button opens that page. A small share comes from remote job boards; for those, Apply opens the board’s listing, which links on to the employer. Jobly never applies for you and never sits in the middle. You get the listing straight from the source, with its real posting date.
Common questions
Does applying directly guarantee a reply?
No. It puts your application in the employer’s own system, complete and in the expected format. What happens next still depends on fit, timing and how many people applied.
Should I apply both ways to be safe?
Usually not. Duplicate applications can look careless, and the ATS often merges them anyway. Pick the employer’s own site.
What if the careers page asks me to create an account?
Some systems, Workday in particular, ask for an account per company. Use a password manager and a dedicated job-search email address so this stays manageable.
